Sinopsis
Based on the true and ancient rituals of sacrifice from the 13th century in Borneo, Jerunei tells the story of Dr. Sani and a team that goes in search of his wife, who disappeared on an expedition to study a mysterious Jerunei (Burial Pole). Combing through the jungle for answers, each member of Dr. Sani’s team faces hallucinations, malevolent disturbances and transported to strange places. Things take a turn for the worse when one of them is taken over by dark forces from beyond the Jerunei.

The film’s title, “Sumpahan Jerunei,” which translates to “Curse of the Totem,” is a nod to the mysterious Jerunei, a burial pole that is said to mark the loss of human lives sacrificed on behalf of prosperous nobility. These burial poles, remnants of the 13th-century sacrificial rituals, still stand today as eerie testaments to a dark past. The story revolves around Dr. Sani, portrayed by the charismatic Bront Palarae, who embarks on a perilous journey into the heart of Borneo’s jungle to uncover the truth behind his wife’s disappearance during her research on the Jerunei.
As the team navigates the dense foliage and treacherous terrain, they are confronted by inexplicable hallucinations and malevolent disturbances. The tension escalates when one of the team members falls prey to the dark forces that seem to emanate from the very Jerunei they seek to understand. This chilling turn of events propels the narrative into a heart-stopping race against time, as Dr. Sani grapples with the supernatural forces that threaten not only his sanity but also his very existence.
