Review
Now, just a year later, Death Whisperer 2 picks up with the Black Spirit returning with a renewed vengeance. With a slightly shorter runtime, clocking in at a brisk 112 minutes compared to the original’s 121, the sequel wisely avoids rehashing the original’s setup, instead diving headfirst into a relentless confrontation with the supernatural.
Yak, still consumed by grief and driven by a thirst for revenge, relentlessly hunts the Black Spirit responsible for his sister’s death. Despite his family’s pleas to let go of the past, Yak remains steadfast in his pursuit aided by the returning character of Sarge Paphan (Ongart Cheamcharoenpornkul, The Legend of Nang Nak), fearing that the malevolent entity will return to claim more victims. This sense of urgency is established from the very first scene, a brutal and action-packed exorcism that sets the tone for the rest of the film.
This direct approach is a refreshing change of pace, allowing the film to capitalise on its strengths and deliver a more visceral and engaging experience. Yes, the action may occasionally stray into the realm of the unbelievable, but it’s a minor quibble in a film that prioritises thrills and chills over strict adherence to a grounded tone. After all, who watches a Thai horror film for its adherence to realism? The true terror lies in the film’s ability to tap into primal fears and cultural anxieties, and Death Whisperer 2 does so with chilling success.
Following a trail of mysterious deaths, Yak eventually discovers a connection to a powerful shaman named Puang, brought to life with chilling intensity by Thai horror veteran, Yasaka Chaisorn of Wandering (2016) and The Medium (2021) fame, who has sought refuge in the Dong Khomot – a forest steeped in mystical lore and inhabited by malevolent spirits. Yak, accompanied by Sarge Paphan and a group of ghost hunters, ventures into this treacherous domain, determined to confront the shaman and put an end to the Black Spirit’s reign of terror.
