review
Whilst Heat set some pretty impossible standards in terms of being the benchmark for cop vs. bank robber movies, of course they weren’t going to close the book there – and why should they, it’s a terrific genre to play in, if done right. The trouble was that it was hard to find an angle that wasn’t compared to Heat. How many variations can you have of burnt-out, failed-marriage, life-on-the-line detectives running down curiously sympathetic, live-by-a-moral-code armed robbers? Well, it turns out, quite a few. Spike Lee’s Inside Man in 2006, Ben Affleck’s The Town in 2010, and David MacKenzie’s Hell or High Water in 2016 shone out amidst the chaff, all distinguishing themselves slightly, each putting a different spin on the same tried-and-tested formula.
